What Is the Difference Between an Emergency Room and a Trauma Center?

Emergency rooms treat a wide range of urgent health problems. This includes broken bones, cuts, burns, breathing issues, chest pain, infections, and injuries from accidents.

A trauma center is a specialized emergency department with additional staff, equipment, and resources to treat the most serious or life-threatening injuries. These centers care for people hurt in major car crashes, pedestrian accidents, serious falls, gunshot wounds, and other severe incidents.

Every trauma center has an emergency department, but not every emergency room is a designated trauma center.

Trauma centers are ranked by level. Level I centers offer the highest level of trauma care. Levels II, III, and IV provide different levels of treatment and stabilization. Emergency responders will decide which hospital is best for you based on your injuries and what resources are available.
