Olympic gold medalist James “Jimmy” Feigen has joined McMinn Law Firm as a personal injury attorney. The attorney is best known for his accomplishments in the sport of swimming where he specializes in sprint freestyle events. Jimmy Feigen won a gold medal in the 2016 Summer Olympics and a silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Feigen studied law and graduated from University of Texas School of Law. He will serve personal injury clients in Austin and surrounding areas.
When McMinn Law firm wanted to expand their team of attorneys, James Feigen, a former Olympic gold medal winner, was a logical choice. Drawing on the drive and character his athletic achievements reflect, Jimmy represents seriously injured clients with tenacity, professionalism, and care.
“Plaintiffs work allows me the opportunity to genuinely help a person in need and hold the individuals responsible for our clients injuries accountable,” said personal injury attorney Jimmy Feigen. “I experienced this first hand with my wife. A car accident left her with extensive injuries to her neck and back. After she sought treatment, the insurance company denied payment. They treated her like a nuisance and it ultimately warded her off. She had to work extra hours just to pay her medical bills. After experiencing the painful process with her, I decided that I would dedicate my life to ensuring others receive the compassion and diligence they deserve after suffering the heart ache of an accident and all that process entails.”

From Athlete to Advocate
Though born in Hilo, Hawaii, Jimmy grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and is a 2008 graduate of the Winston Churchill High School.
Swimming for the Churchill Chargers, Jimmy set the high school national record in the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard freestyle. Other high school accomplishments include the Texas UIL Class 5A state champion in the 50-yard freestyle from 2006-2008. He was also the 2008 National Boys’ High School Swimmer of the Year.
Those victories led to an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Texas in Austin. Jimmy became a member of the Texas Longhorns Swimming and Dive Team and swam in the National Collegiate Athletic Association competitions from 2009 to 2012.
During his four-years in college, Jimmy won 24 All-American honors. He was also the winner of the NCAA National Championships in 2012 for the 4×100 yard freestyle relay, 100-yard freestyle, and 50-yard freestyle.
Jimmy earned a Bachelor of Science, Kinesiology degree, graduating in 2014. This field of study allowed him to blend his ongoing immersion in the science of athletic excellence with a curriculum positioning him for graduate-level work toward a variety of careers.
Jimmy earned his Candidate for Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2017-2018 from St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas. He received his Juris Doctor in 2020 from the University of Texas School of Law in May 2020.
“Thankfully, I had a wide variety of potential areas of practice after my time at the university of Texas. I experienced some corporate litigation, criminal defense, and corporate transactions” said attorney Jimmy Feigen. “I ultimately chose plaintiff’s work because it represents a fundamental purpose in the development of the law. The American judicial system focuses on righting a wrong-whether you’re a blue collar worker or a multinational corporation. Our clients come to us after they’ve been seriously injured-through no fault of their own-by careless individuals.”
Medal-Winning Swimmer, & A Turning Point
Jimmy became an All-American swimmer while a student at the University of Texas. His swimming career includes the following:
- Gold Medal 4×100 Meter Freestyle Relay—2011 Summer Universiade
- Gold Medal 100-Meter Freestyle—2011 Summer Universiade
- Silver Medal 4×100 Meter Medley Relay—2011 Summer Universiade
- Silver Medal 4×100 Meter Freestyle Relay—2012 Olympics
- Silver Medal 100 Freestyle—2013 Worlds in Barcelona
- Gold Medal 4×100 Meter Freestyle Relay—2016 Summer Olympics
Jimmy was on the schedule to compete in the 50 and 100 freestyle events this summer at the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships. Jimmy made the decision to pull out of the competition. Shortly thereafter he made his decision to retire from competitive swimming.
Jimmy’s decision is a move to let the new, younger generation pursue their swimming careers while he moves on in the competitive area of law.
In an interview, Jimmy said: “I went further than I ever dreamed in the sport” and “The great memories are not ones you would expect.” What Jimmy treasures most is the camaraderie and bonding with his fellow USA teammates.
One day in Rio, four teammates including Jimmy ventured out for a drive. While stopped at a gas station, the rowdy, celebratory swimmers found themselves facing guns drawn by two security guards. The situation developed to involve the police. (Charges made by police were determined to be unfounded, and dropped.)
Jimmy experienced the pain and costs of being caught in an unfamiliar and complex legal system, including paying an extraordinary fine for the return of his passport.
The incident in Rio emphasized to Jimmy that there are two sides to every story. The ability to analyze both sides is a fundamental part of the American judicial system. Jimmy made the decision to be part of that judicial system, to be a professional advocate for people thrust into our complex legal system.
Though a new attorney at the McMinn Law Firm, Jimmy has plenty of legal experience. Prior to his current position as an Austin personal injury attorney Jimmy held the following positions:
Summer Litigation Associate—2018, Jackson Walker, focusing on commercial business law
Intern—Texas Supreme Court under the Honorable Justice Green
Summer Litigation Associate—Hunton Andrews Kurth Law Firm providing legal research, analyzing law and presenting findings to supervising attorneys; assisting in amendments to commercial leases, drafting of contracts and motions
Legal Assistant—The Hull Firm working as a law clerk and assistant analyzing evidence to support arguments for hearings and plea negotiations with prosecuting attorneys
Jimmy also has given his time generously to activities and organizations helping people and animals live better lives.
His contributions include volunteering for USA Swimming Make A Splash Foundation, and appearing in a public service announcement commercial for the Humane Society.
Jimmy has presented motivational speeches throughout the country, developing public speaking talents of engaging the audience, practicing, and teaching the power of perseverance when facing adversity.
Those powerful public speaking skills serve Jimmy well in his role as an attorney on the personal injury lawyer team at McMinn Law. We encourage you to contact Jimmy when you need to find a lawyer for your injury case.
