Austin hosts a growing number of avid cyclists who not only ride for recreation but also as a main method of transportation in and around the city. With a thriving bike share program, a bike shop practically on every corner of the city, and some of the country’s worst traffic, it’s no wonder more and more Austinites are choosing this way to get where they’re going.
Earlier this year, McMinn Law Firm launched Bike Rights Austin, an educational campaign to build awareness for both drivers and cyclists on the shared rights of the road. The McMinn team recognized the movement by both the City and its citizens to make Austin a more bike-friendly city, but noted a general confusion from drivers and cyclists alike on the place of bikes on the road. This campaign was successful in providing resources for people curious about Austin biking culture and transportation.
This month, in an effort to consolidate education efforts and secure a centralized message of education and awareness, McMinn Law Firm is redirecting resources and joins the sponsors of Bike Austin, an experienced organization dedicated to distributing this message of respect for cyclists and educating drivers and cyclists on best practices and the rules of the road. The team at Bike Austin has worked diligently over the past few years to cultivate a road environment favorable to cyclists.
This year has seen an unprecedented number of fatalities on Austin roads. With three months still left in the year, there have been a record 82 people deaths in Austin traffic accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a motorcyclist is 15 times more likely to die in a crash than a passenger in a car. McMinn sees the direct impact of Austin’s dangerous roads daily through our work. Just this summer McMinn helped four people injured in motorcycle and bike crashes through the settlement process to help pay for their injuries. The team sees the pain and suffering that comes with an auto accident and is determined to make our city a safer place.
No one knows exactly the cause of this year’s record traffic fatalities, but certainly the sheer number of people on the roads hasn’t helped. By encouraging alternative modes of transportation, traffic deaths are sure to decline. By supporting Bike Austin, McMinn Law Firm intends to do its part in cultivating a healthy, safe community.
