1 dead, 3 injured after Wreck in Jarrell Caused by Off-Duty Officer

One is dead, and three are injured after a crash on Interstate 35 in Jarrell, Texas. 4 vehicles were involved in the crash, including one Hyundai and three trucks with tractor trailers. Police say an off-duty El Paso cop was traveling over 100 miles per hour in the Hyundai on I-35 at the time of the fatal crash on Tuesday morning.

KXAN Report of Fatal I-35 Crash

KXAN reports that at around 2:18 a.m. the Hyundai collided with an 18-wheeler on I-35. Then the Hyundai veered into a ditch, causing a second truck to change course quickly in order to avoid debris, and lost control of the vehicle. The truck skidded into northbound lanes of I-35 and caught on fire. A third truck hit debris in the northbound lanes of I-35 and also caught on fire. Three people were rushed to the Williamson County Seton Medical Center. KXAN reports that “one person died at the scene, it is not known which vehicle the person was in.”

FOX news Reports Indicate that Second Truck Driver Deceased

Fox reports indicate that the second truck driver was struck while out of his vehicle, and attempting to render aid to the Hyundai driver, 26-year-old Alan Eduardo Dieguez. Through a domino effect, 4 vehicles were involved in Tuesday morning’s crash. According to FOX 7, Troopers said they were hoping to charge the off-duty officer on on manslaughter too but technically the second wreck in which the truck driver was killed, is reported as a separate incident.

Austin Statesman Reports Also Indicate Fatality Occurred While Attempting to Render Aid

The driver of the first 18-wheeler involved in crash, that was hit by Dieguez’ vehicle, was killed when he got out of his vehical to aid Dieguz. A second 18-wheeler veered to avoid debris, and crashed in a ditch where it caught fire. The third 18-wheeler struck the driver rendering aid, crashed, and also caught fire.

I-35 Traffic remained blocked for approximately 11 hours

Following the crash DPS troopers stopped all northbound traffic on I-35 in Northern Williamson County between the mile markers of 277 and 275 early Tuesday morning. All northbound lanes of I-35 remained closed until 11:30 a.m Tuesday morning. As of 8:00 p.m. June 21, the frontage road of I-35 near Jarrell remains closed.

Officer Dieguez Placed on Administrative Leave

The off-duty officer, driver of the Hyundai has been released to the Williamson County Jail. According to FOX 7 news, he is charged with DWI and unlawful carrying of a weapon. El paso Police said Dieguez will be placed on administrative leave when he gets back. Dieguez was a three-year veteran of the El Paso Police Department.
