A recent death at a nearby construction site has raised concerns about workplace accidents at construction sites.

The death occurred on July 27 when a metal frame at a manufacturing company off of I-35 collapsed, killing one worker and hospitalizing another. The reason why the frame collapsed is still unknown, but San Marcos police are declining to investigate the accident.

Between the multiple population booms in Texas and the state’s policy that doesn’t require employers to provide worker’s comp, construction workers face very dangerous conditions in the work place. In fact, one in five injured workers are construction workers. Despite recent protests at the capitol, no legislative changes have improved construction safety standards.

On Wednesday hundreds of construction workers converged on the State Capitol to rally for better working conditions and higher wages. As part of their rally, they brought 138 coffins to symbolize the number of workers who died from on the job accidents over the last 2 years in Texas.

From a statistics standpoint, being a construction worker is arguably the most dangerous job in Texas. Every 2.5 days a worker is killed and it is estimated that one in five are injured each year. What surprises many observers is that Texas is the only state in the union that doesn’t require employers to carry workers comp. Texas has whats called a non-subscriber option where companies can opt out of worker’s compensation but they are still required to carry insurance in the event of an injury.

There are several construction related bills that have been proposed for the current legislative session and one of them would require construction companies to carry workers comp if it is enacted.

APD and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) are investigation a construction accident in South Austin that killed one man and injured another. The accident happened on Thursday afternoon when two men were apparently working on “makeshift” scaffolding at an apartment complex just off of South Congress Ave.

The men were three stories in the air doing caulking and it is unsure whether they fell or the scaffolding collapsed. One of the men died at the scene while the other was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Sadly, construction accidents are far too common and they often result in serious injures. If you have been injured in a workplace accident, contact us for a free case evaluation.
